Batman Beyond: Batman - Toying Around Reviews

Updated: Nov 6

This week, we’ll delve into the world of Batman from the animated series “Batman Beyond,” produced by DC Direct and McFarlane Toys. This particular Batman figure was initially released by DC Direct several years ago. McFarlane Toys, a subsidiary of Todd McFarlane Productions, is a company founded by the renowned comics creator Todd McFarlane. Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, McFarlane Toys specializes in creating highly detailed model figurines of iconic characters from various media, including movies, comics, popular music, video games, and sports. On July 27, 2021, McFarlane Toys announced its acquisition of the remaining DC Direct inventory. This acquisition allowed McFarlane Toys to continue producing statues, busts, and other collectibles under the DC Direct brand.

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's check out the packaging.

Batman, like many McFarlane DC figures, comes packaged in a distinctive McFarlane-style rectangular box. The box is adorned in the show’s signature colors of black and red. The figure itself is prominently displayed in the center of the box, accompanied by all its accompanying accessories. The series logo is prominently featured at the bottom of the box, while the right side bears the Batman Beyond logo from the show. The back of the box features artwork inspired by the series, which is also featured on the trading card. The left side of the box cleverly wraps around the box, providing a protective barrier for some in-box collectors who prefer to keep the figure pristine in its original packaging.

INSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's take a look at how the figure comes packed inside.

Inside the box, Batman is meticulously packed in a plastic tray, ensuring his safety and protection. Behind him, additional accessories are securely placed, further enhancing the figure’s presentation.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Taking Batman out of the plastic, we can see that this Batman Beyond figure looks so good, just as he did in the show. Really, no issues at all with him. I do not have the 1st release by DC Direct, so I cannot compare the two.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

Batman Beyond comes with various poses, including closed fists, relaxed hands, holding hands, and two bat-a-rangs. He also includes unpainted wings, a figure stand, and a trading card.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

BATMAN'S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

Mushroom-pegged head: This allows for a full 360-degree head rotation.

Ball-hinged shoulders: These provide 360-degree shoulder rotation and the ability to raise and lower the arms. Without the cap, you get more movement.

Single-jointed elbows: These allow for a 90-degree bend in the elbows.

Swivel hinge wrists: These enable a full 360-degree wrist rotation, as well as up-and-down bending.

Waist swivel: This allows for a 360-degree waist rotation.

Hinged jointed legs: These enable the legs to move out to the sides and provide some front and back motion.

Single-jointed knees: These allow for a bend in the knees, bringing them back to the buttocks of the figure. (My knees are a bit hard to move, and I’m worried I might break the figure if I keep trying.)

Ankle swivel: This allows for a 360-degree ankle rotation.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

Our new Batman Beyond stands at approximately 5.5 inches tall. We compared him to the other DC Direct/McFarlane New Adventures Batman and Batman the Animated Series figures, and he’s right in the middle.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB: 5/5 - The figure paint is flawless. It’s incredibly challenging to make mistakes with red paint on a black figure.

SCULPT: 5/5 - This Batman looks like he stepped straight out of your TV and into your hands.

POSING: 3.5/5 - You can capture some great poses, but some double-jointed elbows and knees would elevate it significantly.

ACCESSORIES: 4.5/5 - A Terry head would have been an ideal choice for this one. Additionally, painting the back of the wings to match the original release and cartoon would have bene a perfect touch.

DURABILITY: 3.5/5 - The plastic is superior to the older DC Direct figures; however, some of the smaller joints around the ankles and hands are still quite small, causing me to be concerned about them breaking off.

OVERALL SCORE: 4.3/5 - If you already own the original Batman Beyond from DC Direct, you’re good to go; but if you don’t have it and are collecting the McFarlane reissues, definitely keep an eye out for this figure.

RETAIL COST: $19.99
