DC Multiverse Action Comics: Superman - Toying Around Reviews

Updated: Apr 2

Today, we are taking a look at the Action Comics Superman figure from McFarlane Toys, This figure is MaFarlane's 2nd take on Superman from the Action Comics; his first one was the first McFarlane DC Multiverse figure we reviewed here. McFarlane Toys, a subsidiary of Todd McFarlane Productions, is a company founded by comics creator Todd McFarlane that makes highly detailed model figurines of characters from movies, comics, popular music, video games, and various sporting genres.

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's check out the packaging.

Starting at the front of the box, we have a big window that lets us see the figure and everything he comes with. At the top of the box, it lets us know that this figure has 22 points of articulation, and below that,t we have the Gold Label sticker. The bottom of the box has the DC Multiverse logo and Superman's name. Turning the box to the side, we have the name of the figure and where the inspiration for the figure came from. The back of the box gives us an artwork of Clark Kent turning into Superman, this is the same picture that is on the trading card inside. Turning the box around one more time, we get a small window that lets us see the figure. The wrap-around window is great for any collector who likes to keep his figure mint in the box.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Taking Superman out of the plastic, we can see that McFarlane made some small improvements on this figure from the 1st release of him. we get a metallic logo on the chest, and the cape is now soft goods with a wire in it to help with posing.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

Superman comes with left and right closed fists, left and right relaxed hands, left and right holding hands, 2 bat-a-rangs, wings, a figure stand, and a trading card.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

SUPERMAN’S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

DUMBELL-JOINED NECK: enables 360-degree head rotation.

BUTTERFLY HINGE: allows shoulder movement in front and back for improved range of motion.

BALL-HINGED SHOULDERS: provide 360-degree arm rotation and raise/lower capabilities.

UPPER BICEP SWIVEL: allows the entire arm below the cut to rotate 360 degrees.

DOUBLE JOINTED ELBOWS: enable over 90-degree arm bending.

BALL SWIVEL HINGED WRISTS: allow 360-degree wrist rotation, bending up and down simultaneously.

DIAGRAM SWIVEL: enables 360-degree figure rotation at the diaphragm.

BALL-JOINTED WRISTS: this allows 360-degree figure rotation at the waist.

HINGED-JOINTED LEGS: enable side-to-side movement, along with front and back motion.

DOUBLE-JOINTED KNEES: allow the leg to bend back to the buttocks of the figure.

BALL-JOINTED ANKLES: enable front and back bending, as well as left and right bending.

TOE JOINT: allows bending the toes for better posing, mimicking running or walking movements.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

Superman stands right around the 7-inch mark. Here is our new Superman standing next to the first Action Comics Superman and Superman Reborn, both from McFarlane Toys.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB 5/5 - The paint on this Superman is very well done, the added metallic paint just maks him pop.

FIGURE SCULPT 3.5/5 - The new chest and fabric cape are such improvements on the figure, however, McFarlane didn't update the wrists or ankles, so that takes it down a few notches.

POSING 3.5/5 - You still can't get him into a good flying pose since the head doesn't go up

ACCESSORIES: 4.5/5 - I don't know why we can't get 2 punching hands on this guy.

DURABILITY 4.5/5 - The plastic is strong, and the joints move so much better than they did in the original figure.

OVERALL SCORE 4.2/5 - If you missed out on this guy the first time around or just want a half-decent update to the figure, go pick him up. He could be a perfect figure with just a few small changes.

RETAIL COST: $19.97
