DC Multiverse: Max Fleischer Superman - Toying Around Reviews

Today, we are looking at the Max Fleischer version of Superman, from McFarlane Toys. This figure is MaFarlane's take on the 1940s Superman animated cartoon shorts. McFarlane Toys, a subsidiary of Todd McFarlane Productions, is a company founded by comics creator Todd McFarlane that makes highly detailed model figurines of characters from movies, comics, popular music, video games, and various sporting genres.

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's check out the packaging.

Starting from the front, we find a large window that offers a clear view of the figure and its accompanying accessories. At the top of the box, we discover that this figure boasts an impressive 22 points of articulation. The bottom of the box proudly displays the DC Multiverse logo and Superman’s name. As we turn the box to the side, we encounter the name of the figure and the source of its inspiration. The back of the box features an artwork of Superman soaring gracefully in the air, which is the same image depicted on the trading card inside. Finally, we turn the box around one more time to reveal a small window that provides a direct view of the figure. This wrap-around window is particularly convenient for collectors who prioritize preserving their figures in pristine condition within the box.

INSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's take a look at how the figure comes packed inside.

Superman comes in a plastic shell with all his accessories when we open the box. The cardboard insert behind the plastic contains the trading card and the flight stand.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Taking Superman out of the plastic, we can see that McFarlane made some minor improvements to this figure from the first release. We now have a metallic logo on the chest, and the cape is now soft goods with a wire inside to aid in posing.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

Superman comes with left and right closed fists, left and right open hands, a figure stand, and a trading card.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

SUPERMAN’S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

DUMBELL-JOINED NECK: enables 360-degree head rotation.

BUTTERFLY HINGE: allows shoulder movement in front and back for improved range of motion.

BALL-HINGED SHOULDERS: provide 360-degree arm rotation and raise/lower capabilities.

UPPER BICEP SWIVEL: allows the entire arm below the cut to rotate 360 degrees.

DOUBLE JOINTED ELBOWS: enable over 90-degree arm bending.

BALL SWIVEL HINGED WRISTS: allow 360-degree wrist rotation, bending up and down simultaneously.

DIAGRAM SWIVEL: enables 360-degree figure rotation at the diaphragm.

BALL-JOINTED WRISTS: This allows 360-degree figure rotation at the waist.

HINGED-JOINTED LEGS: enable side-to-side movement, along with front and back motion.

DOUBLE-JOINTED KNEES: allow the leg to bend back to the buttocks of the figure.

BALL-JOINTED ANKLES: enable front and back bending, and left and right bending as well.

TOE JOINT: allows bending the toes for better posing, mimicking running or walking movements.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

Superman stands right around the 7-inch mark. For comparisons, here we have our Max Fleischer Superman standing next to our Christopher Reeve Superman and the newer Action Comics Superman.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB 5/5 - The figure paint is perfect. The darker colors on this Superman makes it really feel like the cartoon.

FIGURE SCULPT 5/5 - This superman looks like he walked right off my old VHS tape and into my hand.

POSING 4.5/5 - You can get him in some good poses, just still missing a neck joint for flight poses.

ACCESSORIES: 4.5/5 - A flight stand would have been great for a flying Superhero.

DURABILITY 4.5/5 - The plastic feels stronger, and the joints move very well without much force.

OVERALL SCORE 4.7/5 - This guy is great. The soft good wired cape is such a nice touch. The head sculpt is just about perfect. I feel like I'm looking at a Superman that came right from that old 40s cartoon.
