What's going on? For this week's review, we are going to take a look at the Marvel Legends Spider-Man 2099 based on the upcoming Across the Spider-Verse movie.
Miguel O'Hara, an engineer of Irish and Mexican descent works for a company called Alchemax in the year 2099 survived a DNA splicing accident after it was sabotaged trying to kill him. The accident leads to him gaining spider-like powers and propelling him into turning himself into the superhero Spider-Man. The Marvel Legends Series is a lower-tier toy line that collectors and non-collectors alike would be interested in. This is an action figure line based on the characters of Marvel Comics, initially produced by Toy Biz, then by Hasbro. This line is in the 6-inch (150 mm) scale, with spin-off lines in the 4-inch (100 mm), 8-inch (200 mm), and 12-inch (300 mm) scale. these figures tend to look good inside and outside the box.
PACKAGING:
Before we open this up, let's take a look at the packaging.
2099 comes packed on a blister card, this is the normal packaging for the retro-style figures, so not sure why they went this way. The front of the packaging has the Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse logo at the top. This does say part one, but this was made long before they decided to change the title of the 2nd movie to "Beyond the Spider-Verse". 2099, Spider-Gwen and Miles are running down the left side with the Marvel Legends logo below. 2099 is packed on the blister a little off-center. Turning the blister to the side we get a good look at 2099 from the side, including his long talons on his arm. The back of the blister shows the rest of the figures in this wave, including, Miles, Spider-Gwen, 2099, Jessica Drew, Spider-Punk, The Spot, and Peter B. Parker. Turing the blister around one more time we again have a good look at 2099 from the side.
OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:
Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.
Taking 2099 off the blister we get a really good look at the stylized look that he will have in the movie. The blues and reds are very nice and bright, Also the figure has some nice texture in the logo, to make it look a little more future and cybernetic. We also get some texture on his back web cape. The only downside to this figure I can see right off the blister is that the logo doesn't go up through the torso, so when you bend him back the logo just stops and doesn't look good at all.
ACCESSORIES:
Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.
The only thing that 2099 comes with is some open hands.
ARTICULATION:
How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!
SPIDER-MAN'S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:
DUMBBELL JOINTED NECK - This allows you to turn the head 360 degrees.
BALL-HINGED SHOULDERS -These give the arm 360-degree rotation and also the ability to raise and lower the arm.
UPPER BICEP SWIVEL -This cut lets you turn the whole arm below the cut 360 degrees.
DOUBLE-JOINTED ELBOWS -This allows you to bend the arm past 90 degrees.
SWIVEL HINGE WRISTS -This allows you to turn the wrists in a full 360-degree circle while bending them up and down.
DIAPHRAGM SWIVEL -This lets you turn the figure around 360 degrees at the diaphragm.
WAIST SWIVEL -This lets you turn the figure around 360 degrees at the waist.
BALL JOINTED LEGS -This allows the legs to move out to the side along with some front and back motion.
UPPER THIGH SWIVEL -The leg can rotate around a full 360 degrees.
DOUBLE-JOINTED KNEES - The joint allows you to bend the leg itself back to the butt of the figure.
HINGED ANKLES WITH ROCKERS - The ankle hinge allows you to bend the foot front and back. The rockers will enable you to rock the ankles towards the outside and inside of the legs of the figure.
SIZE COMPARISON:
How does the size of this figure compare to others?
Spider-Man 2099 stands right below the 7-inch mark. Here is our new 2099 figure with the new renew your vowes Spider-Man and our old 2099. You can really see how big and bright the new one is.
RATING:
What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?
PAINT JOB 3/5 - The paint job is pretty good on the figure, there are some hits and misses on him. I know he is based on the animated look in the movie but everything does feel kinda flat on him.
FIGURE SCULPT 5/5 - The sculpt makes him look at how he is going to look in the upcoming movie.
POSING 2/5 - It is really hard to get him to stand and pose due to how tiny his feet are, they just don't hold up that huge upper torso this guy has.
ACCESSORIES: 1/5 - He only comes with 2 open hands? noting else, maybe an alt head, wall calling hands, web line....something
DURABILITY 4.5/5 - The plastic is overall ok, don't feel like anything is going to snap
OVERALL SCORE 3.1/5 - This guy is ok, I would say only get him if you are a huge 2099 fan, if not I would wait till he went on sale.
RETAIL COST: $24.99
