Toying Around Reviews - The Loyal Subjects BST AXN: IDW Leonardo

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

For this week's review, we will be looking at Leonardo from The Loyal Subjects BST AXN (Best Action) line. This new wave of figures is based on how the Turtles look in the long-running IDW comic book. "Created in 2009, The Loyal Subjects is one of the market leaders in art-driven collectibles ranging from vinyl toys, fiberglass multiples, and prints to apparel, inflatables, and housewares. The company's licenses include Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and more."

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's check out the packaging.

Leo comes in this new style box than the normal BST AXN figures come in. The Loyal Subjects logo is at the top along with the BST AXN logo. Leo's name is displayed right above the window box that lets you see the figure and everything he comes with. The Nickelodeon and TMNT comic logo are displayed at the bottom. Turning the box to the one side we get some artwork of Leo in action from artist Mateus Santolouco. The back of the box shows us a CGI picture of the figure along with everything he comes with. Turning the box around one more time we get some artwork from artist Mateus Santolouco.

INSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's take a look at how the figure comes packed inside.

Inside the box, we get a clean look at Leo and everything he comes with, behind him is a cardboard slip with a blue color on it as well as his trading card.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Now that we have Leo out of the box we can see that based on just looks alone, how well they did at making him look like his IDW counterpart. There was a San Diego Comic-Con release of the figure that has a darker paint job. I feel like that one was too dark and this one is too light. Something in the middle would have been perfect for the colors.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

Leo comes with a BST AXN sticker, an alt head, two bandana tails for each one of his heads, Katana blades, whoosh effects for the blades, two short blades, open hands, gripping hands, and another set of gripping hands that closely differently.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

LEONARDO'S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

MUSHROOM BALL NECK - allows you to turn the head 360 degrees.

BUTTERFLY HING - This allows you to move the shoulder area front and back to get a better range of motion.

BALL-JOINTED SHOULDERS: It gives the arm 360-degree rotation and also the ability to raise and lower the arm.

UPPER BICEP SWIVEL - This cut lets you turn the whole arm below the cut 360 degrees.

DOUBLE-JOINTED ELBOWS - This allows you to bend the arm a little under 90 degrees.

SWIVEL HINGE WRISTS - This allows you to turn the wrists in a full 360-degree circle while also bending them up and down.

BALL JOINTED LEGS - With this it allows the legs to move out to the side along with some front and back motion.

DOUBLE-JOINTED KNEES - The joint allows you to bend the leg itself back to the butt of the figure.

BALL JOINTED ANKLES - The ankle hinge allows you to bend the foot front and back and also to the left and right.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

Leo stands right around 5.5 inches tall. For comparisons we have Leo standing next to the NECA Jim Lawson Leo and the NECA cartoon Leo. Next, we have Leo standing next to The CGI Nick Turtles Leo and the new Mutant Maham Leo. Lastly, we have Leo standing next to the BST AXN Cartoon Leo and the DC Direct Batman/TMNT crossover Leo.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB 3.5/5 - The paint is good on the figure, he just needs a little bit more paint.

FIGURE SCULPT 4.5/5 - Leo looks good, he looks like he came right out of the comic book.

POSING 2.5/5 - The head is super hard to move, the bandana tail falls out, the hands are super hard to get the weapons in and out of, and the joints are very gummy. It is hard to pose him sometimes.

ACCESSORIES: 4.5/5 - He comes with a good amount of stuff.

DURABILITY 2.5/5 - The plastic is better than the Ralph figure I reviewed almost a year ago, but it's still not perfect. The plastic is still too soft.

OVERALL SCORE 3.5/5 - The figure looks nice but that's really about it. He will look good standing on a shelf in the back of the display lol.

RETAIL COST: $21.99
